Tutors as well as students have to learn to reflect to learn
(or this is a reflective account of my reflective journal)
In 1984 Kolb created a learning cycle, he includes this 'cycle of learning' as a central principle to his experiential learning theory, (ELT) typically expressed as a four-stage cycle of learning; "immediate or concrete experiences" provide a basis for "observations and reflections". These "observations and reflections" are assimilated and distilled into 'abstract concepts' which in turn create new ideas for action which can be "actively tested" in turn creating new experiences;
Kolb argued that the learning cycle can begin at any one of the four points - and that it should really be approached as a continuous spiral. It is presumed though that a reflective process begins with a particular action, which is then understood and reflected upon. The third step would be understanding the general principle or concept under which the particular process happens and then adapting or amending the process to accommodate the new information/approach.
